Do Binaural Beats Work?
The most accurate answer is: sometimes, for some measured outcomes, under some protocols — but the overall literature is heterogeneous.
What systematic reviews show
A 2023 review focused on EEG entrainment found inconsistent evidence across 14 studies. A 2024 systematic review of auditory stimulation and cognition concluded that effects on physiological arousal and cognitive performance were mixed or insufficient for firm conclusions.
Why some reviews sound more positive
Meta-analyses have reported modest average effects for outcomes such as memory, attention, anxiety or pain, while still noting conflicting findings and substantial differences between studies. A 2025 experimental study found some attention benefits under particular parameters and also confirmed that results vary with beat frequency, carrier tone and masking conditions.
What this means for consumers
Do not translate “a study found an effect” into “every binaural-beat recording works.” And do not translate cognitive or relaxation findings into unrelated claims such as guaranteed financial success.
